Mercari how-to

How to avoid a Mercari cancellation after shipping

The order has a valid, checked tracking number on the Order Status page the same day the parcel moves, which is what stands between a shipped item and a cancelled sale.

Before you start

  • A tracked service, bought before you pack rather than after.
  • A carrier counter, so the parcel gets a possession scan.
  • The Order Status page open on the day you drop off.

Steps

  1. Buy a service that produces a tracking number

Mercari's cancellation rule turns on a valid number, so an untracked service is the one thing that cannot be rescued later.

  2. Hand the parcel to a clerk

A counter drop-off gives you a receipt and a possession scan. Mercari's policy says that without a possession scan from the shipping carrier "the seller is responsible for a lost or damaged item".

You should see a receipt, and a first scan appearing on the tracking.

  3. Check the number against the label

Read it digit by digit. Mercari is "unable to remove or modify tracking numbers", so this is the last moment it can be fixed.

You should see a number you have verified rather than remembered.

  4. Provide the tracking number on the Order Status page

Enter the number on the Order Status page for that sale.

You should see the number saved against the order.

  5. Select I Shipped It the same day you drop off

Mercari's documented order is drop-off, then I Shipped It.

You should see the order marked as shipped, with a scan that backs the date up.

  6. Optional: Send the number to the buyer in a transaction message

It is Mercari's own remedy for tracking problems, and it settles the where-is-it question before it is asked.

If it goes wrong

Mercari cancelled a sale you had already shipped

The rule is written for exactly this: "If you ship on your own without a valid tracking number or fail to provide the tracking number on the Order Status page, the transaction may be canceled, even if the item has already been sent" (Mercari help centre, checked 13 September 2026). Keep the drop-off receipt and the scan history when you contact Mercari.

You entered a number with a typo

There is no edit: "Just notify your buyer of the new tracking number in a transaction message. At this time, we are unable to remove or modify tracking numbers." An invalid number is also what the cancellation rule keys on, so send the correct one to the buyer and contact Mercari rather than waiting.

The tracking never got a scan

A label printed at home is not a shipment. Until the carrier scans it, the number can read as invalid and nothing in the order record disagrees with that.

What happens next

With a valid number on the Order Status page, the payout clock is the next thing: "If you opt to ship on your own, you'll need to provide tracking information before you can get paid." Mercari Shipping Protection stays out of the picture on your own label, because it requires a Mercari prepaid label and covers up to $200 ($20 on a First-Class Envelope), so a lost parcel is a claim with your carrier.

Their prepaid labels also stop at 50 lb and at 34 inches on the longest side, which is when shipping on your own stops being a choice.

With I'd Ship That

One label, one number, same day

Buy USPS or UPS per order, print, and the tracking number is on the label and the order row together. Scan-to-ship pulls up the right order from the parcel in your hand, which is how the wrong number stops reaching the wrong sale.

Create a label

Mercari cancels where there is no valid tracking number or none provided on the Order Status page, and states it can do so even if the item has already been sent.

No. Mercari says it is unable to remove or modify tracking numbers, and points sellers to a transaction message instead.

Not on its own. The carrier scan is what Mercari's policies rest on, which is why a counter drop-off is worth the queue.

The drop-off receipt and the scan history. On your own label, those are the only records Mercari did not generate.
