A tracking scan tells you where a parcel has been, not whether it is late. The useful question is how long a given status normally lasts and at what point it stops being normal. These 18 guides give the plain meaning, the usual duration, the scan that should come next, and the day to open a case.

While it is moving

Normal scans between the label and the delivery van.

Shipping Label Created, USPS Awaiting Item

The label is printed and registered but USPS has not scanned the package. It normally clears in 1-2 business days.

USPS in Possession of Item

USPS physically scanned and accepted the package. This timestamp is your proof of ship date, not the label creation.

In Transit to Next Facility

The package is moving between USPS hubs. Whether a quiet gap is normal depends on your service class and zone, not on the clock.

Arrived at USPS Facility

Checked into an RPDC mega-hub. An established one clears it in hours; four days with no departure is the line to act.

Departed USPS Regional Facility

The package left an RPDC. Which hub it left decides everything: origin means days to go, destination means 1-2.

Moving Through Network

A deliberately broad USPS status meaning the package is in the network between detailed scans. Normal for 1-4 days.

At the delivery end

The last mile, and the scans that close a tracking record.

Out for Delivery

Loaded on the carrier's truck this morning. No Delivered scan by evening splits into three very different cases.

The carrier scanned the package as handed off or left at the address. The scan usually carries a time and a GPS point.

Awaiting Delivery Scan

USPS expects delivery but the confirming scan has not posted. It usually clears within 24-48 hours.

Delivery Attempted, No Access

The USPS carrier reached the address but could not get to the delivery point. Redelivery takes 1-2 days; the hold runs about 15.

Available for Pickup

USPS is holding the package at the counter. The hold runs about 15 days, then the package goes back to the sender.

Delivered to Parcel Locker

A real delivered scan. The package is in a locked compartment nearby, and the key or code is usually in your own mailbox.

When something is wrong

Delays, exceptions, and the statuses worth acting on.

Delivered But Not Received

Tracking says delivered but nobody can find it. Most resolve within 24-48 hours once the search runs in the right order.

In Transit, Arriving Late

USPS pushed back the estimate but the package is still moving. Typically 1-3 extra days; 7 silent days is the escalation line.

Delivery Exception / Alert

A catch-all flag that delivery was interrupted. The detail line under it names the real cause and decides whether you act.

Return to Sender

Delivery failed and the package is travelling back to the origin address. The return leg runs several days to over a week.

Package Stuck in Transit / Not Moving

A quiet tracking page is usually a missed scan. Gaps of 1-3 days are routine; a Missing Mail search starts at day 7.

Held in Customs / Customs Clearance

Routine clearance runs a few hours to 3 days. Past 5 to 10 days it is almost always unpaid duties or a bad declaration.
