Shopify shipping guide

How do I fulfill a Shopify order without emailing the customer?

Uncheck Send a notification to the customer on the fulfillment screen before you confirm. The order is still marked Fulfilled, the tracking number is still recorded and the customer can still see it on the order status page, but no shipping confirmation email is sent at that moment. The same checkbox exists on the bulk Mark as fulfilled action.

Turning the email off for one order

  1. Open the order from Orders.

  2. Click Mark as fulfilled in the Unfulfilled or In progress section.

  3. Enter the quantities and the tracking number as usual.

  4. Uncheck Send a notification to the customer.

  5. Click Mark as fulfilled.

Nothing else changes. The fulfillment exists, the tracking number is attached, and the order moves to Fulfilled.

Turning it off for a batch

The bulk action carries the same option. Select the orders, click Mark as, then Fulfilled, and leave Send a notification to the customer unchecked before confirming. Remember that the bulk action has no tracking field at all, so those orders are fulfilled with nothing to follow until tracking is added order by order.

Orders on hold and orders scheduled for a future date cannot have their status changed by a bulk action.

What the customer can still see

Suppressing the email does not hide the shipment. The order status page is the primary place where customers track their shipments, and a fulfillment with a tracking number shows there whether or not you emailed. Customers who look at their account or follow the original order link will find it, which is the honest way to use this option.

When suppressing the email is the right call

SituationWhyWhat to do instead
Printed a day earlyNothing is moving yetEmail when the carrier has it
Fixing a wrong fulfillmentAvoids a second confusing messageFix quietly, then confirm once
Customer already toldDuplicate mail reads as noiseLet the order status page carry it
Local pickup in personThere is no shipment to announceUse the pickup flow

Do not use it to hide a late shipment. The delay is still visible on the order.

The email you might still trigger

Shipping update is sent when tracking information is updated, and it is a separate template from the confirmation you just suppressed. If you fulfill quietly and add the tracking number later, the customer can hear from you then instead. Deciding at fulfillment time, with the tracking number already attached, is the only way to control exactly one message.

Key takeaways

  • The notification is a checkbox, not a store setting you have to change.
  • Fulfillment and tracking are recorded either way.
  • Adding or editing tracking later can still send the shipping update email.
  • The checkbox only appears when the order has an email address on it.

Fulfillment and notification happen in one step

The Shopify connection is in early access. When you buy a label we create the fulfillment against the fulfillment order with the tracking number and carrier already attached, and Shopify sends its own notification from your templates, once, with a working link.

There is no second pass where a number gets typed in and a second email goes out. If you need a quiet fulfillment for a particular order, do that one in the Shopify admin with the checkbox cleared.

Create a label

The templates live under Settings, then Notifications, and the per fulfillment checkbox is the control Shopify gives you at fulfillment time. Most sellers leave the notification on and fix the real problem instead, which is usually fulfilling before tracking exists. A store with no shipping emails at all tends to generate where is my order messages.

The option to send a notification is only available when the order has an email address on it. Orders created without one, such as some manual or point of sale orders, have nothing to send to. Add an email to the customer record if you want the notifications, then fulfill.

No. Out for delivery and delivered are triggered by tracking events received from the carrier or fulfillment app, not by your fulfillment action. If the carrier reports the shipment and the number is recognized, those notifications can still go out. Only the shipping confirmation is controlled by the checkbox.

Adding or editing the tracking information on that fulfillment is what triggers the shipping update email, so that is the usual way sellers announce a shipment after a quiet fulfillment. It is not the shipping confirmation template, so check the wording of the update template before you rely on it as your only shipping message.
