How to correct a tracking number on eBay
The order carries the right tracking number, and the wrong one is gone rather than sitting alongside it.
Checked against eBay's tracking items you've sold page on September 13, 2026.
Before you start
- The correct tracking number, read off the label rather than from memory.
- Seller Hub or the eBay app, signed in to the selling account.
- The carrier you actually shipped with.
In Seller Hub
-
Open Paid and shipped in Seller Hub
In Seller Hub, open Orders, then Paid and shipped, and find the order.
You should see the order with the tracking number currently on it.
-
Select the order by checking the box next to it
eBay's tracking steps start with the order selected.
You should see the box ticked and the order actions available.
-
Open the tracking control
With the order selected, select the Dispatch dropdown menu, then Add tracking number.
You should see the existing numbers, with the option to add, edit or delete.
-
Delete the wrong number
Remove the number that does not belong to this parcel.
You should see the order with no tracking number on it.
-
Enter the correct carrier and number
Pick the shipping carrier you actually used, then type the tracking number from the label.
You should see the corrected number against the right carrier, not yet saved.
-
Select Save
Save the change on the order.
You should see the order showing as shipped with the corrected number.
In the eBay app
-
Open the sold item in the eBay app
In the eBay app, open the sold item.
You should see the item page for that order.

If it goes wrong
- eBay documents no deadline for the edit
Unlike several marketplaces, eBay publishes no edit window on the tracking control, which adds, edits and deletes numbers. That is not the same as unlimited, so make the correction the moment you spot it rather than testing how long it stays open.
- Six numbers is the ceiling
eBay allows up to 6 tracking numbers on one order. Adding a corrected number without deleting the wrong one uses two of those six and leaves the buyer with a dead link.
- A corrected number does not rebuild the scan history
eBay states that tracking "must show an acceptance scan to prove shipping" (eBay, tracking items you've sold, checked 13 September 2026), and its seller protections run on the carrier scan rather than the edit: "If you ship an item within your stated handling time, and you upload tracking before the estimated delivery date from one of eBay's integrated shipping carriers that shows evidence of successful delivery, you won't be responsible for refunding the buyer".
What happens next
The corrected number is what eBay validates with the carrier. Top Rated requires at least 95% of transactions with tracking uploaded within handling time and validated by the carrier (eBay), and a number the carrier never scanned is not validated. eBay counts a shipment late when the delivery scan lands after the latest estimated delivery date and there was no carrier scan within handling time, and allows no more than 5 late shipments or 3% of transactions for Top Rated.
Nothing to retype
With eBay connected, the tracking number and carrier code go back to eBay from the label we bought, so there is no second entry to get wrong. eBay marks the order Shipped and emails the buyer. If a write-back fails, it keeps retrying for up to 7 days.
Related questions
Yes. eBay documents the Add tracking number control on the order as the place to add, edit and delete numbers.
eBay publishes no deadline. Treat that as undocumented rather than unlimited, and correct the number as soon as you notice.
Correct the order first, then message the buyer. eBay documents that when tracking is added, "The buyer will then get an email with the order tracking details", so the corrected number reaches them the same way.
It can. Top Rated needs 95% of transactions with tracking uploaded within handling time and validated by the carrier, and a number that never scans cannot be validated.
